JBIX – the Internet traffic hub in southern Malaysia

JBIX serves as a critical internet exchange point in southern Malaysia.

Johor Bahru sits at the southern tip of Peninsular Malaysia, separated from Singapore by a narrow strait and connected by two causeways that carry thousands of vehicles — and vast amounts of data — every day. It is one of the fastest-growing economic regions in the country, home to Iskandar Malaysia, manufacturing zones, logistics hubs, and a burgeoning digital economy. Yet until recently, most of Johor's internet traffic took a long detour north to Kuala Lumpur before being exchanged. JBIX was built to change that.

What Is an Internet Exchange Point?

An Internet Exchange Point (IXP) is a physical location where different networks — internet service providers, content delivery networks, cloud platforms, and enterprises — connect their routers and exchange traffic directly. Without an IXP, traffic between two networks in the same city might travel hundreds of kilometres to a distant peering point and back, adding latency and cost.

By peering locally at an IXP, networks can exchange traffic in microseconds rather than milliseconds. The benefits are immediate: lower latency for end users, reduced transit costs for operators, and improved data sovereignty since domestic traffic stays within national borders.

Why Southern Malaysia Needs Its Own IXP

Johor Bahru's proximity to Singapore gives it a unique strategic advantage. Singapore is Southeast Asia's primary interconnection hub, with some of the highest concentrations of submarine cable landings and data centres in the region. A local IXP in Johor Bahru allows Malaysian networks to peer with international content providers at the doorstep of this hub, without routing traffic through Kuala Lumpur.

For businesses in Iskandar Malaysia and the broader southern corridor, this translates to faster access to cloud services, lower-latency video conferencing, and more responsive enterprise applications. For ISPs, it means significant savings on upstream transit costs that would otherwise be incurred for traffic destined to stay local.

Inside JBIX

JBIX is housed within EBB's JB1 data centre in Johor Bahru. The exchange operates a resilient Layer 2 peering fabric supporting port speeds of 1 GbE and 10 GbE, with a clear upgrade path to 100 GbE as demand grows. Participants connect via a simple cross-connect within the facility or via remote peering arrangements for networks that are not physically co-located.

The exchange is carrier-neutral and operates on an open-peering policy, meaning any network that meets the technical requirements is welcome to join. There are no mandatory peering agreements or exclusivity arrangements. This openness is fundamental to JBIX's mission: to lower the barrier to interconnection in southern Malaysia and make peering accessible to networks of all sizes.

As more networks join and traffic volumes grow, JBIX is evolving from a regional convenience into a critical piece of Malaysia's internet infrastructure. We invite ISPs, content providers, and enterprises in the southern region to explore peering at JBIX and experience the benefits of local interconnection firsthand.
